CONFUSION OVER FUSION BOOK, ANIMALS AND KAN AND LI DIRECTIONS
(This should be added to FAQ's)

Julia posted this question earlier:

J> My questions are about the seventh formula of Fusion 1.  Initially, the formula sets the dragon force at the right side of the body, and the tiger force on the left side, but when the fire ring is formed, the figures are in the opposite side.

1)Where is the right place for the tiger and the dragon, left or right ?
2)Through which pakua do I have to absorb their energy? >

The reason you, and just about everyone else is confused, is partly because of what I feel was an editorial misjudgment on the part of Mantak Chia.  First of all, know that of the nine formulas in the Fusion book, only the first 4-and-a-half are part of the Original Fusion 1 as taught by the Taoist adept White Cloud.  The others are a mishmash downloaded from higher Kan and Li practices.

I was editor/writer on this book, and cut out the last four formulas because they were incomplete and I knew from experience that a little knowledge can be dangerous.  Why bypass training in the Fusion 2 and 3 formulas and start jumping out of your body when you can barely understand what is inside your body?  It's like driving a car because you figured out how to put the key in and turn the engine on.  You still need driving instructions.  From a training sequence point of view, it doesn't make sense to jump in [out] and start speeding around.

Let's just say that of Master Chia's many wonderful qualities, impatience unfortunately ranked high in this case.  I've been doing damage control on this one ever since, there have been a number of casualties from people's energy getting stuck OUTSIDE their body (or peripherally, but non-functionally, attached) because they have no ground to integrate WITHIN their body.  So don't go shooting your pearl out of your body prematurely.  It is equivalent to a physical embryo undergoing premature birth from its mother's womb.  Do you want to put your fragile newborn spiritual life in an incubator to save it?

Chia overrode my editing and put back in the last four formulas without consulting me.  He later admitted it was a mistake.  The point of Fusion 1 is to master your emotional body, not to harmonize the outer Earth Forces, which is the true purpose of Greater Kan and Li.

The two posted replies to your question are both excellent and moving in the right direction but are missing the final answer to your question.  Why are the collection points in Fusion 1 reversed left and right for the Animals/Outer Directions?

The answer is very simple.  When you are practicing the Fusion formulas, you are still in the Later Heaven (manifest realm).  You are approaching the altar of the 5 Elements in your Body Temple, and performing an alchemical operation to join them together in order to effect a change in your life.

In China, the altar of a Taoist Temple is always on the North Wall, the direction where new energies are being reborn from.  You are an outsider, praying to the Gods to help you manage your life, give you wealth, health, relieve your sorrows, whatever.  So as you approach the North (i.e. the womb opening of physical creation symbolized by the collection point at the perineum), the East is to your right (where your liver naturally is) and the West is to your left (where the lung collection point is at the bottom of the lungs/diaphragm is it's metal chi descends into first the yang/left kidney during the creation cycle).  And the South is behind you, i.e. your heart/Sun/yang protects your vulnerable backside as you pray in the direction of the portal/altar into Early Heaven.  So the collection points of Fusion 1 all reflect the position of FACING NORTH.

In the Greatest Kan and Li, from which the animal diagram in the Fusion Book was taken, you are FACING SOUTH.  Why?  Because during the Lesser Kan and Li you got initiated into the passage way into Early Heaven.  This is accomplished by not only reversing the flow of the Creation Cycle and reversing the coupling of your internal yin and yang body spirits (shen), but actually going into that Early Heaven realm within your body.  This dimensional shift was also overlooked in the way Master Chia originally taught me the Lesser formula, and it took me years of practice to understand the importance of this piece, called "Forming the True Earth" in the Taoist alchemical texts.

So finally, when you practice the Greater Kan and Li, you now are taking the position of sitting with your back to the North Wall of the Temple, i.e. you have already entered the Early Heaven Altar.  You ARE the ALTAR, you are coming from True Earth and are NOW FACING SOUTH, you are embracing and nourishing the Direction of Manifestation and Later Heaven where the Sun shines and the Five Elements play at creation.

You are now an alchemical adept mediating and birthing into your life the Natural Planetary Forces, including the animal powers symbolizing the Greater Shen of the Five Directions.  If you are facing South, the East and West directions are reversed, East is on your left and West is on your right.  Thus the Dragon and Tiger are reversed.

There is, of course, much, much, much more to say about this which is covered in my kan and li and fusion courses.  But I suggest at the level of Fusion 1 you focus on managing your emotional body.  (I am re-doing my Fusion 1 audio tapes, available in this [Healing Tao USA] online bookstore after March 15, 2000.  These tapes go into other corrections to Fusion 1 formula needed for western adepts, which have a very different emotional body from Chinese adepts).  I see many students coming to study Kan and Li who are not properly prepared, and thus their Kan and Li practice suffers.  The Kan and Li formulas are powerful but many drop away because they have not properly prepared for them (emotional resistance from personal shen) or understood them deeply enough to get them working effortlessly.  It is my intention to correct this.

May the Light of the Tao Shine within Us,
Michael Winn
