Healing Love Assumed Basics, plus.

(including male massage)

Helpful sacrum self-massage methods are described in all of the regular books.  (Usually includes massage of the lower abdomen, genitals, perineum - especially hui yin - most conveniently while in the shower, sacrum, lower back, kidneys - all basic and generally a good idea.)

Jing ~> Sacrum Relationship: Sacral Pulsing

It is critical to induce sacral pulsing.  When the muscles intimate with the sacrum pulse, they naturally draw jing from the genitals into the sacrum and begin to pump the jing up the spine.  The sacrum is a big key, sacral pulsing is the secret to turning that key, and the jing-into-pulsing-sacrum relationship must become fluent.  Unaroused sacrum breathing is one of the ways to do that, and it's the easiest one to do any time, in public or otherwise, without looking silly.

(Sacral pulsing is a deeper version of the "sacral pump", and sacrum breathing largely replaces "testicle breathing".)

While sacral pulsing, to a degree, pumps jing up the spine and activates the whole spine - it's not enough.  More comprehensive spine work is needed to complement what sacral pulsing starts.  More details on all of this in the sacrum section of the spine essay.

Massage of Genitals, Ducts, Glands

Stagnation (inhibited circulation of energetics, fluids, and related loss of tissue suppleness) is the #1 danger of jing gong, (with related heat as #2).  All of the glands, ducts, need to be massaged in order to maintain healthy circulation.  This is true for men in general, and even more so for men working with semen retention.

reference: Bone Marrow Nei Kung, Chapter 3.

The genital massage techniques in the Bone Marrow Nei Kung book are the most thorough and effective.  Be sure to massage the ducts, epididymis, and the gonads.  An especially effective testicular massage is here.  A silk handkerchief can be conveniently purchased at a local clothing store for the silk cloth massages.

NOTES:

    - One trick is to soak your balls in ice water immediately after genital massage (especially re: the testicle-pulsing massage).  The testicles like to be cool, and this method effectively clears them of residual heat and stagnation.  It's very healthy.

    - I strongly caution you against the more intense practices in the BMNK book until you are very proficient at balancing your sexual energy and you are being taught by an instructor, in person.  See Gentle Marrow Washing for an alternative view.

Jing-chi also builds up, and can stagnate, at the sensitive underside of the tip of the penis.  Circulation can be restored by gently slapping the tip with the tips of your fingers, or by flicking your finger/s at the tip of the penis.  Don't do this so hard that you hurt yourself!, only so hard as to produce a slight sting.

Prostate cancer is the number one incident cancer and the number two cause of cancer deaths among US men.  Chinese medicine views cancer as a form of late-stage stagnation.  It's a healthy idea to occasionally (at least twice a month) massage the prostate and seminal vesicles (yes, via the rectum).  While showering is convenient, perhaps with the blunt end of a brush that no one else uses, or, most effectively, with an adult store product called the crystal wand.  (Self-massage with a finger is not deep enough to effectively reach the glands.)  Although prostate massage is not aesthetic, it's far better than having the prostate surgically removed.  Short of cancer, clearing early stage jing stagnation is simply healthy, and supportive of jing gong.  More men are finding that prostate massage is one of the critical keys to unlocking chronic tension from the whole lower tan tien, resulting in significant physical, sexual, emotional and spiritual benefits.

CAUTIONS & NOTES:

    - Be careful; don't hurt yourself.  I am not a doctor, you are responsible.

    - If you are doing this in the shower, do not lubricate with a cleansing agent such as soap or shampoo; use a nourishing or neutral lotion, such as a hair conditioner, skin moisturizing lotion, cod liver oil, coconut oil.

PC Muscle Exercise, Extended to Include Muscles of the Entire Lower "U"

reference: article at Tantra.com.

Again, this is an unaroused exercise.  It helps to strengthen, bring health and circulation, to the pelvic floor.  This assists the entire lower abdomen, as well as makes the movement of sexual energy - through whatever method - easier.  Do not do this while urinating; some doctors say that doing this to repetitively stop/start the flow of urination can lead to bladder infections.

An extension of the pc muscle exercise is to separate the exercise into four muscle groups.

1. the muscles starting somewhat below the belly button, all the way to the pubic bone.  Yup, you can flex these muscles.  This potent area is known as the "sperm palace", its vascularly loaded, and is one of the areas that builds with tension and then involuntarily contracts (pulses) during orgasm.

2.  the muscles just below the pubic bone, of the urogenital diaphragm.  This is particularly important for men, as this area is the gateway for sexual energy to pass from within the scrotum to the rest of the body.

3.  the pelvic floor, what people usually exercise when they do pc exercises.

4.  muscles near and around the sacrum, and actually, all the way up through the lumbar vertebrae.  Jing is energetically resonant with bone marrow.  The spine is a key stack o' bones.  The sacrum is jing's gateway into the spine.

Lower Tan Tien Massage

This is in the HT, but perhaps doesn't receive appropriate emphasis, and tends to get lost in the larger topics of chi self massage and chi nei tsang:

Massage the whole area between the belly button and the pubic bone, on a regular basis.  This can be done with the fingers, and/or massage tools.  This is primarily an unaroused massage, but it's also helpful & feels good if your partner massages this area just after love-making.

Plastic hand held massage tool.  Inexpensive, effective, rounded enough so that it's relatively safe - though still apply progressive moderation.  Battery-powered same (HoMedics PM-30BX, about $10 from amazon or elsewhere) is amazingly more effective!!!  Great for abdominal massage!  HOW TO in the massage section.  (... and yeah, I know, "silly-looking martian-patrol-bot".)

Bongers are an amazing tool, which can be used (amongst other things) for resolving stagnation from the lower abdomen.  See the hitting section for instructions and warnings.

who can forget?

the twiddle method

There are all sorts of ways that jing runs through this area, and is stored there, anatomically and energetically.  The whole area: the center-line, as well as to each side.  Its classically a very important area in Taoist cultivation (the "sperm palace") and in Chinese medicine.  There is the tendency, with the sexual practices, for this area to get gradually jammed up - which can have seriously messed up consequences for jing and everything that it supports.

If you're interested in learning the acupoints along the lower abdomen, and the acupoints that are classically used in combination with those, A Manual of Acupuncture is the English-language acupoint reference book, in hardback, CD, and flash cards.

Massage should be done in addition to various other lower tan tien practices (breathing, meditation, stretching, structural alignment, etc.) that also promote healthy circulation, but generally tend toward other layers of depth, and with somewhat different effects.

NOTE!:  Distal acupressure is an important complement to lower tan tien massage.

If you are on an extended program of working with this:

After working with regular massage technique for some days, I find it helpful to switch to the chi nei tsang self-help style for some days.  Sometimes I'm slightly over aggressive with the regular massage style, or I uncover some disharmony / minor trauma that doesn't resolve easily...  My body produces minor protective tension around that trauma area, which direct massage can exacerbate.  The chi nei tsang self-help provides a very gentle yet very deep way to release that tension / trauma... in a way that is relatively non-invasive, non-injurious, non-threatening to the protective tension.

Kidneys: Rotating the Waist

The kidneys themselves need to be massaged.  After all, the other name for the water element is "kidney energy"; that should tell us something.  If you're interested in amplifying, processing, transforming .. cultivating the dynamics of the lower tan tien, include the kidneys.  They are a major organ of the lower tan tien - and the adrenals, which rest on top of the kidneys, are the next step (after the gonads) of the endocrine ladder.

Most systems of qi gong and the 3 Taoist internal martial arts (tai chi, xing yi, and pagua) have movements that rotate the waist in ways that specifically massage the kidneys.  One of the more effective waist-rotating methods that I've tried for massaging the kidneys is the "bear frolic" that is contained in John Du Cane's Power Qigong video.
